The Atmel® | SMART ATSAM4C microcontrollers are Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) for smart-energy applications.
Based on dual high-performance ARM® Cortex®-M4 processors, these devices operate at a maximum speed of 120MHz and feature between 256kbytes and 2Mbytes of embedded Flash, up to 304kbytes of SRAM and an on-chip cache for each core.
The dual ARM Cortex-M4 architecture allows for the integration of an application layer, communications layers and security functions in a single device, with the ability to extend programme and data memory via a 16-bit external bus interface. The availability of a co-processor enables the designer to isolate application, communication or metrology functions in different partitions.
Together with an advanced cryptographic engine and hardware anti-tamper functions, this combination of capabilities makes the ATSAM4C family ideal for use in smart meters and other smart-energy equipment. An embedded 50 × 6 segmented LCD controller eliminates the need for an external display controller.
Peripheral features of importance to metering designs include a floating point unit, Full-Speed USB host/device port, five USARTs, two UARTs, and up to seven serial peripheral interfaces.
For time-stamping meter readings and other captured data, the ATSAM4C MCUs feature a calibrated low-power real-time clock running on the back-up domain at a current as low as 0.5μA.
Atmel also supplies the ATSAM4CM series of MCUs with an integrated analogue front end for metrology, suitable for both single-phase and polyphase meters.
