Vishay Intertechnology has released an integrated ultra-violet (UV) light sensor featuring Filtron™ UV technology, which provides for both high sensitivity to UV light and excellent linearity.
The Vishay Semiconductors VEML6070, which combines a photo-diode and a signal-processing IC in a compact 2.35mm x 1.8mm x 1.0mm surface-mount package, converts measurements of solar UV light intensity to a digital read-out.
It may be used for UV detection in products such as smartphones, fitness wristbands, flame detectors and weather stations. The sensor saves space by integrating the circuitry needed for these applications into one compact unit.
A robust refresh-rate setting helps the system designer to lower costs and simplify the circuit by eliminating the need for an external lowpass (resistor-capacitor) filter. The VEML6070 offers high resolution and excellent performance under long-term solar UV exposure.
The built-in photo-diode is sensitive to light at wavelengths between 280nm and 400nm; peak sensitivity is at 355nm. The sensor is immune to the flicker from fluorescent lights.
Vishay has provided the VEML6070 with a software setting that cuts typical power consumption to 1μA in Shut-down mode. Its output is highly stable over a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C thanks to a temperature-compensation scheme implemented in the chip.
