A new wide-body IGBT driver from Vishay offers industrial designers a robust and economical means to provide optical isolation of high-voltage industrial power circuits. It is easy to implement and provides for both safety and electrical-noise isolation.
The VOW3120 features an external creepage distance of >10mm between high-voltage power circuitry and low-voltage control circuits which are vulnerable to damage caused by excessive voltages.
The device’s isolation voltage specification includes the ability to withstand transient peak voltages as high as 8,000V, and repetitive peak voltages as high as 1,414V. These safety isolation ratings satisfy the requirements of domestic and global electrical-safety standards.
In addition, the VOW3120 IGBT driver offers high noise-isolation capability, as demonstrated by its extremely high typical specification for common-mode rejection of 50kV/µs.
The VOW3120 consists of an infra-red light emitting diode optically coupled to an integrated circuit with a power-output stage. The voltage and current supplied by this optocoupler make it ideally suited for directly driving IGBTs with ratings up to 1,200V/100A.
