Microchip has introduced the RN52, a certified Bluetooth® module which supports audio for music streaming, as well as hands-free voice capability.
The Bluetooth version 3.0 module includes standard Bluetooth audio and data profiles for all smartphone platforms. It is fully compatible with Bluetooth versions 2.1+EDR, 1.2 and 1.1.
The advantages of wireless technology, together with the rapidly expanding smartphone and tablet markets, are increasing demand for Bluetooth wireless audio accessories. The RN52 module makes it easy for designers to add Bluetooth audio capability to end-product designs, since it integrates a Class-2 Bluetooth radio, baseband controller, UART interface and programmable I/O, stereo speaker outputs, microphone input and a USB port into a single device.
The Bluetooth stack is hosted on the RN52. This means that the module works with any microprocessor or microcontroller, using dedicated GPIO pins to access control and status functions. In addition, it is software configurable through commands carried over a UART console interface.
The RN52’s embedded Bluetooth stack includes all the popular Bluetooth profiles, as well as the iAP interface for use with iPhone® and iPod® devices. In addition, the RN52 supports a variety of audio codecs, such as SBC, aptX®, AAC and MP3.
The RN52 is available as a 13.5mm x 26mm x 2.7mm surface-mount package.
