Cypress Semiconductor has announced a new family of CapSense® controllers which enable engineers to quickly implement sleek capacitive buttons, sliders and proximity sensors that operate robustly even in difficult conditions.
The new CY8CMBR3x controllers provide better performance in parameters such as water tolerance and proximity sensing than any previous touch-sensing controller, but impose no requirement on the user to develop code or firmware.
The CY8CMBR3x controllers are part of Cypress’s Mechanical Button Replacement (MBR) family, which uses the company’s SmartSense™ Auto-Tuning algorithm to completely eliminate the requirement for manual system tuning. SmartSense Auto-Tuning enables automatic tuning of more than 10 parameters to produce the best possible touch-sensing performance.
The controllers are supported by Cypress’s EZClick™ software tool, which combines GUIbased configuration and product debugging with support for production-line testing, while requiring no firmware development.
The controllers offer two implementation options, supporting up to 16 capacitive buttons, or up to 8 capacitive buttons while driving up to eight LEDs.
Designs using the CY8CMBR3x controllers can also realise one or two proximity sensors with a 30cm sensing range, supporting a ‘wake on approach’ function. Additionally, the controllers feature flanking sensor suppression, which eliminates false touches in designs with closely-spaced buttons.
Devices in the CapSense MBR family offer robust sensing in noisy environments, benefiting from Cypress’s patented CapSense sigma-delta sensing method. This provides high immunity to conducted and radiated noise, and offers a signalto-noise ratio of greater than 100:1.
The controllers also feature an integrated voltage regulator to filter out power-supply noise, and additional filters for spurious noise.
The CY8CMBR3x devices are available in 8-, 16- and 24-pin versions.
